The standard German Army Infantry field cap at the beginning of WW2 was the M38 field cap or side cap. It was first worn in 1935 by the German Army and was eventually replaced in 1943 by the M43 Feldmutze. The M38 feldmutze is sometimes referred to as the M35, M38, feldmutze, field cap or side cap.
